Unexpected Adventure: Exploring the Best Things to do in Hervey Bay

As fate would have it, our long planned trip to the historic coastal town of Seventeen-Seventy was not to be. Despite the advertising from Queensland’s tourism board, the weather in the “sunshine state” is often not beautiful one day, or perfect the next.

Due to severe flooding, the roads in and out of Seventeen-Seventy were flooded, and our campervan hire was already booked. Luckily, we don’t let pesky things like weather and last minute itinerary changes stop our sense of adventure! We checked the road flood maps and decided we could get to Hervey Bay instead. It’s also north of Brisbane, and also on the coast. Shayne and I had never been, and although it was raining, the weather was warm and the flood waters were starting to recede. We figured there had to be some great things to do in Hervey Bay for families on holiday, so off we went!

Best Things to do in Hervey Bay

The beaches in Hervey Bay are absolutely beautiful, with crystal clear water and soft white sand. Even though the weather wasn’t great for swimming, we adored taking daily strolls along the beach. When the tide is low, it really goes all the way out, and the rippled effect it leaves on the sand is stunning. The sunsets weren’t too shabby either.

The trip to Hervey Bay was a last minute decision, which is incredibly out of character for me, because I over plan every holiday! So I had to discover all the best things to do in Hervey Bay with families, in a very short span of time.

Here are all my favourites!

Best Things to do in Hervey Bay

Whale Watching Cruise

There are loads of whale watching tours available from Hervey Bay. The best time of year to see them is from July to October, when some cruise tours even guarantee a sighting!

Whale watching cruises typically last for several hours and depart from the marina in Hervey Bay. Once onboard, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the coastline and the ocean as you make your way out to the whale watching grounds. Along the way, keep an eye out for dolphins, turtles, and other marine life that may surface near the boat.

Once you reach the whale watching grounds, you’ll have the opportunity to see humpback whales in their natural habitat. These gentle giants are known for their acrobatic displays, breaching out of the water and slapping their tails on the surface. You’ll also be able to hear their haunting songs, which can travel for miles through the water.

*Pro Tip – Make sure you take some sea sickness tablets if you are prone to motion sickness.

This living museum showcases the area’s rich cultural and social history, offering a glimpse into the past and the way of life of early settlers. With over 60 historical buildings spread over 4 hectares, you can take a stroll through the streets of a bygone era and explore interactive exhibits that provide insight into the region’s history. Highlights include a restored railway station, schoolhouse, hospital ward, blacksmith’s shop, general store, and courthouse. Hop on the miniature steam train for a unique perspective on the exhibits or check out the large collection of vintage vehicles. The museum also hosts heritage-themed festivals, markets, and exhibitions throughout the year where you can learn traditional crafts and skills, watch demonstrations, and enjoy local food and drink.

Urangan Pier

Stretching out for almost 1 kilometre over the ocean, this iconic pier is a beloved tourist destination.

Originally built in the late 1800s, the pier has undergone several renovations over the years to keep it safe and functional. As you walk along the pier, you’ll notice a variety of marine life swimming in the crystal-clear waters below. Look out for dolphins, turtles, and schools of colorful fish.

For those who prefer to relax and take in the views, there are plenty of benches and shaded areas along the pier where you can sit and enjoy the ocean breeze. It is also the perfect spot to take in a sunset.

Hervey Bay Esplanade

Spanning over 17 kilometres, this beautiful waterfront promenade offers stunning views of the Hervey Bay coastline. As you walk along the esplanade, you’ll notice the abundance of palm trees, parks, and picnic areas that dot the landscape. The path is perfect for a leisurely stroll, jog, or bike ride, and you’ll come across various exercise stations along the way.

There are plenty of opportunities to stop and relax along the way, too! With many cafes, restaurants, and shops located just a short distance from the esplanade. You can grab a coffee or a bite to eat while enjoying the ocean views or pick up a gift or souvenir.

Pialba Beach

This popular beach is situated just a short drive from the centre of Hervey Bay, and offers plenty of amenities to make your visit comfortable and enjoyable. It was our favourite spot to spend the day, and the plus when visiting in low season, is how quiet the beach is!

Pialba Beach is the perfect place to take a refreshing swim, build sandcastles with the kids, or simply lay back and read a book. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also rent a kayak or paddleboard and explore the waters around the beach. And when you need a break from the sun, you can retreat to one of the nearby cafes or restaurants for a cool drink or a bite to eat.
