Best Chiang Mai Tours & Activities to Book
#1 Thai Farm Cooking School
My family and I highly recommend taking a Thai cooking class at an organic farm in Chiang Mai. You will get to prepare authentic Thai dishes with the assistance of a friendly Thai cooking instructor. The school is located in the countryside, providing a glimpse into the traditional way of life for locals living rurally. On the way to the cooking class, you’ll stop at a local market to learn about local produce used to make Thai dishes.
The organic garden is impressive, and everything is grown by the team with love and care. You’ll learn how to be creative and understand the basics of cooking Thai food, as the menu is not fixed, and you cook from a variety of choices, including dietary requirements and preferences. #2 Elephant Nature Park
Experience a day in the life of an elephant caretaker at a rescue sanctuary deep in the jungle outside Chiang Mai. You’ll enjoy a scenic hour-long drive, and upon arrival be welcomed with light snacks and a history of the sanctuary.
In small groups, you will join your guide on a walk through the sanctuary to observe the free-range elephants and learn about each individual’s rescue story. There will be photo opportunities aplenty as you stroll through the grounds. You will watch the herd play in the river before enjoying a buffet vegan lunch. This is a unique opportunity for an ethical elephant interaction and a chance to support a sanctuary committed to the welfare of these majestic creatures.
This was the highlight of my family’s entire trip to Chiang Mai, and was the inspiration behind our visit.

#3 Jungle Flight Zip Line
About an hour’s drive from your Chiang Mai accommodation, you will arrive at the 1000-year-old forest. Your friendly and knowledgeable guides will assist you in getting into your safety equipment. Pay close attention, as they will explain how to safely enjoy your adventure.
A short 5-minute trek will have you arrive at the starting point of Jungle Flight. The thrilling experience includes over 2 hours of zipping through the jungle, and witnessing breathtaking views of the jungle scenery. You’ll also have the opportunity to ride Thailand’s longest zip line, which spans 1000 meters.
Afterwards, you’ll return to the base camp to relax and refuel with a freshly cooked meal.
#4 Doi Inthanon National Park
Take a tour to Doi Inthanon, the highest mountain in Thailand. It is part of the Doi Inthanon National Park, known for its lush forests, waterfalls, and stunning views. The mountain is also home to many species of birds, making it a popular spot for birdwatching. The park is named after King Inthawichayanon, who had a special interest in the forest and initiated reforestation efforts in the area.

Take plenty of selfies and pose in front of the paintings for unforgettable memories. Art in Paradise is an excellent attraction for families and anyone seeking a creative experience in Chiang Mai.
#6 Golden Triangle Day Trip
This day trip from Chiang Mai discovers the highlights of Thailand’s Golden Triangle. You will get to admire the beauty of the famous White Temple in Chiang Rai and visit the Golden Triangle where Myanmar, Laos, and Thailand meet.
It includes a boat trip along the Mekong River, where you can marvel at the natural scenery. Enjoy a delicious lunch and explore House of Opium before returning to Chiang Mai. There is time for break to stretch your legs and have a refreshing cool drink along the way.
#7 Street Food Tour
Are you ready for a mouth-watering adventure in Chiang Mai? On this tour, your local guide will lead you and a small group of up to eight people on a personalized journey. They will greet you at your accommodation and take you on a route to two evening food markets. You can’t go to Thailand and NOT get a Thai Massage.
This experience gives you a choice of 1-2 hour massage options, from classic oil to traditional Thai and more. Your complimentary pick-up from city centre accommodation will take you to the lush, tropical spa. You will relax in serene surroundings with refreshing herbal drinks during your spa consultation.
The massage treatment is carried out in a private room with en suite facilities, a comfortable space for your massage, followed by a refreshing shower. After your treatment, your therapist will guide you to an air-conditioned area for homemade ginger tea and a light snack.

#10 White Water Rafting
I haven’t done this tour in Chiang Mai, but I have done White Water rafting in Bali, Indonesia and in Cairns, Australia. This Chiang Mai water rafting is still on my bucket list.
This tour features a transfer from Chiang Mai – a 1.5-hour journey to the base camp, where you can grab some last minute snacks before your adventure.
Upon arrival, certified guides provide a safety briefing and practice session before heading out on the river. You will navigate through Class III and IV rapids, surrounded by the stunning jungles of northern Thailand.
#11 Grand Canyon Water Park
With over 35 acres of space, you’ll have plenty of room to play and explore at this huge outdoor water park. Take advantage of the park’s various activities, including giant sliders over 10 meters long, canoeing and kayaking with stunning panoramic views of the Grand Canyon Water Park.
You can also experience the thrill of zip lining, with 2 lines spanning over 400 meters, crossing over the Grand Canyon water. And don’t miss out on the only wakeboarding in Chiang Mai and the Northern part of Thailand! With certified and well-trained lifeguards on site, the park ensures your safety and convenience with life jackets provided for all swimmers.
#12 Night Bike Tour
If you’re after a laid-back way to explore Chiang Mai, an evening bike tour is perfect for you. Cycling through the city’s quaint lanes, you’ll get a chance to see sights you might miss if traveling by car. The tour takes you to Wat Intakhin, where you’ll find a serene 700-year-old white Buddha and the Three Kings Monument, which tells the story of Chiang Mai’s founding. You’ll also visit the city moat and Wat Lok Molee, where you can experience the enchanting beauty of the illuminated stupa and wooden prayer hall while hearing the monks chanting their prayers.
Next, you’ll explore the grandest monument of Chiang Mai, Wat Chedi Luang. The temple houses the City Pillar and three auspicious dipterocarp trees, believed to protect the city and bring good luck. The tour ends at Chiang Mai’s Gate Market where you can sample a variety of street foods. #13 Elephant Poo Poo Paper Park
My family of four (pictured below) were unexpectedly delighted with this very unique holiday experience!
The Elephant Poo Poo Paper Park teaches you about the fascinating process of transforming elephant waste into various paper products. With your private guide, you’ll have the opportunity to make recycled paper crafts and explore the park at your own pace.
There is also a great gift shop here to buy eco friendly souvenirs and gifts.

#14 Local Village Experience
This tour will take you to Sankampang Village, where the locals are dedicated to preserving their traditional weaving techniques. Immerse yourself in the process of creating a master fabric piece, and try your hand at weaving.
As part of this program, you’ll also have the opportunity to participate in a local dessert cooking class, where you’ll be involved in the meal preparation. The tour is a perfect blend of village visits and community-supporting activities. Lunch is provided, and gives you the chance to connect with the locals.
#15 Sticky Waterfall
The Sticky Waterfall is a unique natural attraction located in the Bua Tong Valley, about an hour’s drive from Chiang Mai. The waterfall is called “sticky” because of its limestone composition that creates a natural non-slip surface. This makes it possible for visitors to climb up the waterfall without any equipment. The waterfall is made up of several levels and pools, and the clear water that cascades down creates a refreshing swimming spot for visitors. The surroundings are lush and green, making the Sticky Waterfall an ideal location for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike.
This tour includes a visit to a temple and a blessing by a Buddhist monk, before heading to Bua Tong waterfalls. Take a moment to appreciate the peacefulness of your surroundings and soak in the tranquility of this beautiful park. This tour is a perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural experience, making it an unforgettable adventure.
#16 Chiang Dao Cave
Immerse yourself in the natural wonders of Chiang Dao, a must-see destination less than two hours from Chiang Mai. This tour of a limestone cave system invites visitors to experience stunning stalactites and stalagmites. There are five interconnected caves to explore, with a total length of over 12 kilometers.
Upon entering the caves, you are met with a cooler, more humid environment that offers a respite from the heat outside. Some of the caves are illuminated with electric lights, while others require visitors to carry gas lanterns. Throughout the caves, there are numerous Buddha statues and offerings left by faithful pilgrims. One of the most impressive statues is a 13-foot reclining Buddha, while a row of five seated Buddhas in the first cavern is also a highlight for many visitors.
#17 Gibbons, Trekking & Mae Kampong
This tour will take you on a journey to Mae Kampong, a picturesque village surrounded by towering mountains. But as everyone knows, my weakness is animals, and this tour provides the chance of a lifetime – to see gibbons in the wild.
This rehabilitation project has allowed these majestic creatures to live in a secluded area, and a caretaker brings you to the viewing area. Although sightings aren’t guaranteed, you’ll learn about their lives in the forest of Chiang Mai, and 10% of the tour price is donated to the caretakers who provide food and ensure the Gibbons protection and safety.
The tour also includes a visit to Mae Kampong, where you can stroll through the quaint streets, chat with the locals and immerse yourself in the magical atmosphere. The real adventure begins with a 3km jungle hike through the forest, seldom visited and not well-known. You’ll gaze in wonder at one of the oldest trees in Chiang Mai while the local guide explains the flora and fauna along the way. Finally, you can cool off in the Mae Kampong waterfall and enjoy a delicious local lunch before heading back to the city.
Cheap or Free Things to do in Chiang Mai
#18 Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden
Located about 25 kilometres northwest of Chiang Mai city, the Queen Sirikit Botanic Garden is a beautiful and expansive garden that is well worth the trip. This garden is dedicated to promoting the conservation of Thailand’s natural resources. It features an impressive collection of plants and flowers from throughout the country.
Named after Queen Sirikit, the wife of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the Botanic Garden covers over 1,000 acres. It is divided into several zones, each showcasing different types of plants.
One of the most popular areas is the orchid conservatory, which houses over 400 species of orchids, many that are endemic to Thailand. The garden also has a collection of rare and endangered plants, as well as a section devoted to cacti and succulents.

#19 Chiang Mai Wua Lai Walking Street Saturday Night Market
If you’re looking for a fun and vibrant night out in Chiang Mai, the Saturday Night Market is a must-visit. This market takes place every Saturday evening along Wua Lai Road in the heart of the city’s historic district. It’s a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. It is probably my favourite free thing to do in Chiang Mai. Although, be warned, entry is free… but you will no doubt spend money here!
The market is known for its lively atmosphere, colourful stalls, and wide range of quality goods on offer. You can find everything from handmade crafts and souvenirs to clothing, jewelry, and tasty street food. There are also plenty of live music performances, street performers, and other forms of entertainment.
One of the unique features of the Saturday Night Market is its focus on traditional Thai handicrafts. Many of the vendors here sell handmade items like ceramics, textiles, and wood carvings that are unique to the region..
As you wander through the market, you’ll be greeted by the aroma of delicious street food from all over Thailand. There are plenty of food vendors selling everything from pad thai to coconut icecream. The market is open from around 4pm to midnight, so you can spend ample time exploring the stalls and soaking up the atmosphere.

#20 Meet a Monk
One unique experience that you can have during your visit to Chiang Mai is to chat with a monk. Buddhism is an important part of Thai culture, and there are many temples and monasteries throughout the city where you can meet and talk with local monks.
It gives you the chance to learn more about the Buddhist way of life, beliefs, and practices that guide their daily routines. You can ask questions about meditation, mindfulness, or any other aspect of Buddhism that interests you. When we did this on our visit, the monk we spoke to let us know he enjoyed the opportunity to practice english.
It’s important to note that when speaking with a monk, to show respect and follow proper etiquette. This includes wearing modest clothing, removing your shoes when entering a temple or monastery, and refraining from touching the monks or their robes.

#21 Explore the Old City
The Old City is the historic heart of Chiang Mai and home to some of the most beautiful temples and traditional architecture. The best way to explore the Old City is on foot, it’s an easy area to navigate.
As you wander through the Old City, you’ll come across beautiful temples like Wat Chiang Man. It is the oldest temple in Chiang Mai, and Wat Phan Tao, which is made entirely of teak wood. You can also visit the famous Tha Phae Gate, once the main entrance to the city and now serves as a popular gathering spot.
The Old City is also home to a number of traditional markets, including Somphet Market, known for its fresh produce and delicious street food. You can browse market stalls and try a variety of local delicacies like mango sticky rice, pad Thai, and spicy papaya salad.
The area is also home to a number of charming cafes and restaurants, where you can take a break from your explorations and enjoy a cold drink or traditional Thai meal.

#22 Visit the many Temples
Visiting Buddhist temples is one of the most popular activities for tourists in Chiang Mai, and for good reason. The city is known for its beautiful temples, which are some of the best examples of Thai Buddhist architecture in the country. There are more than 300 temples in the Chiang Mai region, each with its own unique history.
Some of the most popular temples to visit include Wat Phra Singh, which is famous for its stunning murals and golden Buddha statue, and Wat Chedi Luang, which features a towering chedi that was once the tallest structure in Chiang Mai. Another must-see temple is Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, which is located on a mountaintop just outside of the city. It offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.

#23 Shopping Centres
Chiang Mai is home to a variety of large shopping malls. The most popular shopping centers in Chiang Mai include Central Festival Chiang Mai and Maya Lifestyle Shopping Center. Central Festival is the largest mall in Chiang Mai, with over 250 shops, a cinema, and an indoor ice skating rink.
Maya Lifestyle Shopping Center is known for its unique architecture and trendy shops, including international brands and local designers. Visiting these shopping centers in Chiang Mai is not just about shopping, but also about experiencing the vibrant local culture, trying delicious street food, and enjoying the air-conditioned respite from the heat!
