Mt Tibrogargan Walk an Easy Hike in the Glasshouse Mountains

My husband, Shayne, and I are far from exercise enthusiasts, so we generally choose hikes that are long enough to be interesting, but easy enough for most fitness levels. Mt Tibrogargan walk in the Glasshouse Mountains was a perfect choice for a recent weekend adventure. This Sunshine Coast hiking spot in Queensland has a few different circuits, and for the more daring, there is also the summit climb.
This blog is written purely for the love of travel. I don't use affiliate links and I'm not paid to recommend anything - just sharing what I actually did and what I genuinely think.
While we didn’t venture all the way to the summit of Mt Tibrogargan, our exploration of the Tibrogargan Circuit, Trachyte Circuit, and Jack Ferris Lookout left us with an appreciation for the natural beauty of the Glasshouse Mountains.

Trachyte Circuit
We chose to explore the Trachyte Circuit, an accessible trail that we had read leads to the Jack Ferris Lookout point. This circuit, spanning 5.7 kilometres, is known for its fascinating geological features, including volcanic rock formations.
Walking along the Trachyte Circuit, we enjoyed the rugged terrain and easy pathways. The trail was well-maintained, and we encountered several other hikers, but not so many as to make it crowded.
The circuit is named after “trachyte,” which is a type of volcanic rock. Trachyte is known for its fine-grained texture and is often used in architectural and construction purposes due to its durability and attractive appearance.
As you hike along the Trachyte Circuit, you’ll have the opportunity to see volcanic rock formations up close. These formations are remnants of the region’s volcanic history, dating back millions of years. The Glasshouse Mountains themselves are volcanic plugs, and the presence of trachyte rock in the area is a testament to the volcanic activity that shaped the landscape.

Jack Ferris Lookout
It didn’t feel like a long walk before we came upon the sign leading us to the Jack Ferris Lookout.
This picturesque viewpoint offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, pine tree plantations and lush countryside. While the fairly easy hike to the lookout is short, we spent a long time enjoying the lookout.
The lookout is named after Jack Ferris, a local timber getter who operated in the Glasshouse Mountains area during the early 1900s. Jack Ferris was known for his resilience and determination, as he single-handedly transported timber down the steep slopes of Mount Tibrogargan.
The lookout not only offers panoramic views of the stunning Glasshouse Mountains National Park but also serves as a tribute to the individuals like Jack Ferris, who played a vital role in the region’s history. A reminder of the hard work and dedication of those who contributed to the development and exploration of this beautiful natural landscape.
Because it is a circuit, we did not walk out the way we came in, but continued on the trail. If you are here just for the lookout, it would be a quick walk in and out by doubling back instead.

Mt Tibrogargan Circuit
At this point, we thought we were just staying on the Trachyte trail, but somewhere along the way, we ended up on the Mt Tibrogargan Circuit.
Mt Tibrogargan Circuit is also known for its moderate level of difficulty. This 4.1-kilometre loop takes you through the heart of the Glasshouse Mountains, offering captivating views along the way. As we embarked on the Mt Tibrogargan walk, we were treated to stunning panoramic views of the Glasshouse Mountains National Park. The rugged peaks, lush vegetation, and unique rock formations created a picturesque backdrop for our hike.
The trail is well-marked and so you would think it is relatively easy to follow, but that would mean you underestimated our ability to NOT follow directions.
I do have a terrible habit of just enjoying the nature, and the flowers, and the patterns on the tree bark… and… and… completely miss the signs telling me which direction to go. And believe me, the trail winds through a diverse range of plant life, including native Australian bushland, so there were LOTS of wildflowers to admire.
We had our fitness watches tracking our hike, and we ended up walking close to 10 kilometres. If you add up the two trails – Tibrogargan Circuit and Trachyte Circuit, it seems we ended up doing both. Luckily, we had no where we needed to be, so meandering around the trails made for a wonderful few hours.
We finished walking around midday, which was perfect timing for us to head to the Glasshouse Tavern for lunch.

Mt Tibrogargan Car Park
The Mt Tibrogargan car park is a convenient starting point for hikers looking to explore the various trails in the Glasshouse Mountains, including the Tibrogargan Circuit and the Trachyte Circuit. The car park is located at the base of Mt Tibrogargan in the Glasshouse Mountains region of Queensland, Australia. It’s easily accessible by car, and the entrance is well signposted.
As you are heading towards the car park, you feel like it will be isolated. It is truly out in nature, with mountains surrounding you… but upon arrival we saw that it was very busy. The car park was already full, so we parked along the road and walked in to the trailhead.
Note: There is a farm across the road and they were selling some fresh locally grown produce. I recommend bringing some spare cash to buy some! We took home a delicious watermelon and some yummy avocados.
