Araucaria Falls Trail: One Of The Scenic Rim’s Hidden Gems

When it comes to exploring the natural wonders of the Scenic Rim in Queensland, Australia, hiking is one of our favourite past times. The Araucaria Falls trail in Main Range National Park is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. My husband and I embark on weekend adventures to hikes pretty regularly, and we were lucky to stumble across this serene trail. We found a remote waterfall, nestled within a pristine part of ancient Gondwanan rainforest.

As with many of our hikes, I must confess that I had done little research beforehand. The decision to explore Araucaria Falls in the Goomburra Section of Main Range National Park was a spontaneous choice made by my husband, driven by our mutual desire for adventure and a touch of wanderlust.

Getting to Araucaria Falls and Araucaria Falls Parking

Accessing Araucaria Falls requires a bit of a drive… pretty much no matter where you’re coming from.  It’s located within the Main Range National Park, which is in the Scenic Rim of Queensland, but also fairly close to the New South Wales border.

Driving into Main Range National Park is easily done in a 2WD or 4WD, and you will pass by Gordon Country camping grounds in Goomburra Valley on the way. There are lots of cows, goats and kangaroos as you drive through this section, and you know you are truly out in country Queensland.

However, driving further into the National Park and getting to the parking area at the Araucaria Falls trailhead – will require a 4WD, as you will need to pass a couple of small creek crossings.

Parking at Araucaria Falls is relatively straightforward. The trailhead has a designated parking area, which can accommodate a few vehicles. When we arrived, there was only one other vehicle parked here. We absolutely love secluded wilderness spots, and this one fit the bill nicely.

The Araucaria Falls Trail

The Araucaria Falls hike offers a gentle introduction to the natural beauty of Main Range National Park. As we set off on the well-marked trail, we were immediately enveloped by the sights and sounds of the rainforest. The towering araucaria trees, from which the trail takes its name, created a lush canopy overhead, casting dappled sunlight on the path beneath. The flora is phenomenal, the trees are so twisted and beautiful, and the ferns and greenery look straight out of a Jurassic Park movie.

The trail is relatively flat most of the way, and not overly challenging, making it accessible to hikers of varying fitness levels – like ourselves. It’s a perfect choice for those seeking a leisurely stroll in the heart of nature. As we ventured deeper into the rainforest, the air became cooler, and the chorus of birdcalls accompanied our journey, creating a symphony of serenity.

During our hike, we only passed one other couple on the way in as they were leaving. It is one of the more isolated trails we’ve hiked and felt as though we had the entire rainforest to ourselves.

In the last picture below, you can see my six foot three husband dwarfed by the massive trees that grow here.

Araucaria Waterfall

The highlight of the hike, of course, is Araucaria Falls itself. As we approached the falls, the sound of rushing water grew louder. We took a moment to soak in the natural beauty, and as we arrived at the top of the falls, we had to do some scrambling down rocks to get lower down and take some photos.

I am scared of heights, so this was somewhat terrifying, what absolutely worth it. The remoteness and being completely immersed in nature were total perfection. I did not stop smiling.

What truly made our hike through Araucaria Falls unique was the incredible symphony of bird sounds that surrounded us. The rainforest was alive with their calls and provided an enchanting soundtrack to our journey.

One thing to note is that Araucaria Falls is a place where nature truly takes centre stage. There is no mobile phone service here, a blissful escape from the constant connectivity of the modern world. A chance to unplug, unwind, and reconnect with the natural world around you.

Tips for Exploring Araucaria Falls

Check the Weather: Before embarking on your journey, be sure to check the weather forecast. Rainforest hikes can become slippery and challenging during heavy winds, rain, or storms.

Footwear: While the trail is not overly rugged, comfortable and sturdy hiking shoes are still recommended for good grip and support.

Clothes: It was a warm day when we visited, but we did wear a light jacket and were very happy had them with us. It gets very cool in the rainforest, several degrees cooler than out in the sunshine.

Hydration: Carry enough water to stay hydrated, especially if you plan to spend time enjoying the falls and the tranquillity of the rainforest.

Wildlife: Keep an eye out for the diverse wildlife that calls Main Range National Park home. Respect their space and maintain a safe distance.

Leave No Trace: Follow the principles of Leave No Trace by packing out all trash and being mindful of your impact on the environment.

Hiking Time: The Araucaria Falls hike time is relatively short and can typically be easily completed in a couple of hours, allowing you to enjoy the natural beauty without feeling rushed. It took us 1.5 hours from the time we walked in until the time we walked out, and that included time spent relaxing at the waterfall.

Toilets: There are no toilet facilities at the trailhead, so if you need to go it should be before you drive in… unless you’re comfortable peeing in nature.
