As you step into the Death Row Unchained Animal Rescue in Brisbane, you are immediately struck by the sense of compassion and community. Which makes perfect sense, as all the lovely people who work at this non-profit organisation are volunteers. You can tell they all want to be here. I myself stumbled onto Death Row Unchained after searching for a farm animal sanctuary Brisbane area.

There are many wildlife sanctuary locations in Australia, which I love visiting and supporting throughout my travels. However, after going vegan in 2016, I’m now aware of the many other animal species in need of refuge. Death Row Unchained (DRU) rescues all kinds of animals whose situations are dire, from dogs, cats, pigs, goats, cows, chickens, horses and more. These animals have been abandoned, surrendered, or deemed “unadoptable” due to their age, breed, or medical condition. They are often scheduled to be euthanized within days, if not hours, of their arrival.

DRU animal rescue is situated on Mount Cotton Road, in Burbank, amongst wide open spaces, perfect for the animals who call it home.

Tours operate at Death Row Unchained each weekend, and ours began with an introduction from Kate Bijkerk, the sanctuary founder. Her love for animals is unmistakable, as she talks about what led her to open this animal rescue in 2015.

After introducing us to the other volunteers who’d be escorting us on the tour, we began our visit with the furred and feathered friends that reside here.

On the Farm Animal Sanctuary Tour

Tours include a one hour walk, which is guided by a volunteer and filled with animal interactions. The guide oversees the visitors, and ensures that the animals are treated with love and care. DRU’s disability cows are able to be fed through the fence line, by those who choose to purchase a bag of feed (it’s just a few dollars). It keeps these special needs cows safe and comfortable, and also those who are visiting. It’s actions like these that show animal welfare is in the forefront at Death Row Unchained, throughout every interaction.

The guide shared individual stories of rescue and recovery about the animals we met throughout our tour. Whilst we enjoyed our interactions and cuddles with them, we also learnt about their personalities and preferences.

Throughout the tour, we also learnt about the various programs and services offered by the DRU, such as foster care, adoption, and medical care.

At the end of the tour, visitors had a chance to ask questions and learn more about how they can support DRU’s mission. We found out about volunteering, fostering, donating, or simply spreading the word about the important work that DRU is doing.

The team at Death Row Unchained Animal Rescue work tirelessly to save as many animals as possible. They coordinate with shelters and transporters to rescue animals in danger, provide medical care, and find foster homes and forever families for each and every one of them. They also advocate for animal welfare and work to raise awareness about the importance of spaying, neutering, and adopting rescue animals.

One of the things I love most about DRU, is their commitment to the animals they save. They take the time to get to know each animal’s personality, quirks, and needs, and match them with the perfect foster or adoptive family. They also provide ongoing support to their foster families and ensure that each animal receives the necessary care to thrive in their new home.

The good news is, they have an online shop on their website, so I didn’t have to miss out permanently!
